Liebherr Crane Auctions and the Liebherr 946 Excavator: A Pre-Bid Checklist

I handle used equipment buying for a small excavation and crane fleet. Seven years in, I've personally signed off on eleven purchases that should have been caught before bidding. Total hit once you add transport, repairs, and rental replacements: roughly $210,000. This is the checklist I run before every auction. Use it when the machine is sold as-is, at an auction, and you plan to run it, not flip it.

Who This Checklist Is For

This checklist is for contractors, rental fleets, and small mining operations buying one or two pieces at a time. It's not for dealer-sold equipment with a fresh inspection and a warranty. If you're buying a used Liebherr 946 excavator or a crawler crane from a known brand, the pre-bid work is what separates a good deal from a money pit.

I'm not a mechanical engineer, so I can't talk about metallurgy or hydraulic internals. What I can tell you from a buying perspective is the process I use to avoid repeating my own mistakes.

The Pre-Bid Checklist

Step 1: Verify the exact configuration by serial number

The Liebherr 946 excavator isn't one standard machine. It's a platform with different engine tiers, counterweight options, boom lengths, and undercarriage configurations. An auction sheet saying "Liebherr 946" tells you the family, not the actual build. Find the serial number plate, take a photo, and match it with the Liebherr parts portal before you register to bid.

I once bid on a machine advertised as a 2009 946. During inspection, we found that the serial prefix corresponded to a 2006 build. The clerk said "replacement cab"—or rather, she said that, and the seller wasn't available. We walked. The machine reappeared a week later at a lower start bid. I don't know whether the year was wrong, but I'm not paying 2009 prices for a 2006.

Step 2: Pull the electronic service history, not just the hour meter

The hour meter on the dash can be replaced. Liebherr's onboard electronics generally store runtime data and service intervals. Start the machine cold, or ask for a video of a cold start, and check the display before anyone clears codes. I don't have hard data on how many auction units have tampered meters, but in our last four auction purchases, two had noticeable discrepancies between recorded hours and mechanical wear.

A non-working display is not automatically a deal-breaker. But it should reduce your bid by the cost of a diagnostic call and a new controller. If the seller says "the computer doesn't communicate," that's your clue to dig deeper.

Step 3: Measure the undercarriage and pins yourself

Bring calipers, a wear gauge, and a flashlight. Check track link height, bushing diameter, and pin boss clearances. If you can get the boom raised, look for slop in the bucket pins and the boom pivot. On a machine the size of the 946, the undercarriage can consume your entire repair budget faster than anything else.

This gets into mechanical expertise territory, which isn't my area. I'd recommend taking a track-and-undercarriage specialist with you if you're serious. From a buyer's perspective: a clean coat of paint hides a stretched track frame. Don't rely on the auction photos.

Step 4: Read the auction terms before the sale, not after

This is the step most people skip because it's paperwork. But it's the easiest way to lose money. Check the buyer's premium, the removal deadline, and the storage fee if you can't load out on time. Some auctions charge a load-out fee on top of the hammer price.

People think the auctioneer is legally responsible for mistakes in the description. Actually, most heavy equipment auction terms say everything is as-is and located at a specific site. The actual protection is your own inspection, not the brochure.

(Note to self: I once calculated a winning bid based on the hammer price and forgot the 10% buyer's premium. The machine wasn't overpriced—but the total was $6,800 more than I had in my head.)

Step 5: Plan transport before you bid

Transport is where emotion ruins budgets. A Liebherr 946 excavator is in the 45-tonne class. That isn't a load for a pickup. You're looking at a lowboy, a Class 8 tractor, permits, and sometimes escorts.

The phrase "real truck" shows up a lot in construction site conversations. A Liebherr mining truck is a real truck—a production hauler that carries hundreds of tons. A Denali truck, by comparison, is a nice service vehicle. Neither is what you use to move a 946. For that, you need a heavy-haul permit and a driver who knows the route.

If I remember correctly, our first 946 move cost $1,850 plus a permit, though I might be misremembering because we bundled it with another load. Ask for a transport quote before you bid, then add it to your total.

Step 6: Know where to get forklift certified before the machine arrives

This seems out of place until the machine is on the trailer and someone has to unload palletized attachments. If you're asking where to get forklift certified, start with OSHA's training standard, not an online card.

Per OSHA (osha.gov), powered industrial truck operators must complete formal instruction covering truck controls, load handling, and site-specific hazards, plus a practical evaluation. Certification is employer-specific under 29 CFR 1910.178(l), so a card from a previous job may not satisfy an audit. Look for a local training provider that includes hands-on evaluation, not just an online quiz.

For an excavator, the same logic applies: a CDL doesn't make someone qualified to swing a 946. Documented training on the specific type of equipment matters more than a generic license.

What Usually Goes Wrong

Most of my mistakes weren't about the machine. They were about the cost after the bid. Use this formula: hammer price + buyer's premium + transport + estimated repairs + lost revenue while the machine is down. If that total is within 15% of a low-hour dealer machine, buy the dealer machine.

People think a known crane brand is automatically worth the premium. The reality is the brand matters less than the specific unit's condition. When it comes to the brands crane operators trust, Liebherr is near the top—and that's why Liebherr crane auctions attract serious bidders. But a neglected Liebherr will cost you more than a clean off-brand machine with honest maintenance records.

Don't let the auction atmosphere push you. Set your total cost ceiling, not just your bid ceiling. The auctioneer's pace is designed to make you comfortable, but your checklist is the only thing that remembers the repair estimate after you're home.
