Step 1: Pull the Serial Number Before You Get Attached
The first thing I do is verify the machine. Not the brand sticker—the actual chassis and manufacturer serials.
Here's the drill:
- Match the serial on the data plate with the engine serial, carrier VIN, and whatever's on the title.
- Send that serial to your local Liebherr dealer or contact Liebherr directly. Confirm the model year, original configuration, and whether it's a genuine export model or a machine that's been re-imported.
- Ask about the crane's production history. Some serial numbers have factory bulletins or retrofits that haven't been logged.
This step seems obvious, but you'd be surprised how often people skip it. A mismatched serial is a huge red flag. If paperwork is missing, assume there's a reason.
Step 2: Get the Load Charts and the LICCON Data
Most people think load charts are only for the operator. In an auction, they're a buying tool. A Liebherr mobile crane is only as good as its rated capacity limiter setup and its configuration.
Here's what to do:
- Ask for the load charts that match the exact configuration you're bidding on—boom length, counterweight, and luffing jib if present.
- Connect to the LICCON system (Liebherr's crane control system). Download the event history and check for overload warnings, fault codes, and logged alarms. This is the crane's memory, and it doesn't lie as much as the seller's description.
- If the seller won't unlock the required data, budget for a full inspection and recalibration after purchase.
A load chart isn't marketing material. It's the document that defines what the crane can actually do legally and safely in a specific setup. If an auction listing says "300-ton crane" without reference to a load chart, that's a red flag.
Important context: "capacity" is never a single number. According to Liebherr's official product specifications (liebherr.com), the LR 13000 crawler crane can lift up to 3,000 tonnes, but that's at a specific radius with specific counterweight and boom arrangement. The LTM 1750-9.1 has a listed maximum of 750 tonnes, also under set conditions. If you're new to reading crane specs, don't hold me to a single figure—get the chart that matches the machine and have someone who reads cranes verify it.
Step 3: Look at the Machine, Not the Hour Meter
An hour meter tells you how long, not how well. I once saw a low-hour crane that had been beat harder than high-hour machines. And I've seen the opposite.
Check areas that reveal real condition:
- Pins and boom sections: look for wear, cracks, or weld repairs. Paint hides a lot.
- Sheaves and wire rope: worn grooves and frayed rope cost real money.
- Slewing ring and outrigger condition: these are expensive to fix and often overlooked.
- Carrier suspension and tires for LTM models: road travel is hard on them.
Bring someone who's done crane inspections. If you don't have one locally, there are used equipment inspection services that specialize in auction sites. Paying $2,000 for a good inspection is a no-brainer on a machine that'll cost $400,000 or more.
Step 4: Verify Parts Availability Before Bidding
Here's where I paid my stupid tax. We didn't have a formal parts verification process in 2019. It cost us because the swing drive on a 2016 LTM we won was back-ordered for 14 weeks. The machine sat in storage. Storage fees piled up. The rental contract we had lined up fell through.
Now it's step four every time:
- List the common wear parts and failure items: hydraulic cylinders, sensors, controllers, and boom section components.
- Ask the local Liebherr dealer for current lead times on those parts—don't take the seller's word.
- Check whether the parts for that specific model and year are still in production.

Step 5: Read the Auction Fine Print
People think the hammer price is the price. Actually, the hammer price is just the start.
Before you register to bid, get the auction terms. Look for:
- Buyer's premium—often 5% to 15%. On a $500,000 bid, that's a serious number.
- Inspection and load-out deadlines. Miss them, and you pay daily storage.
- Online bidding platform fees—these add up too.
- Export and import requirements if the machine crosses a border; tariffs and certificates can stall a deal for weeks.
Here's the thing that changed my approach: the final price is never the auction price. I know that sounds obvious, but it's easy to let the excitement of bidding override basic math. Write down the maximum all-in number before the auction starts, and don't cross it.
Step 6: Check Emissions and Regulation Compliance
Auction prices don't care about your local regulations. But you will when the crane can't get a permit to operate.
Two things to check:
- Emission tier or stage. In the US, a machine's EPA rating matters—older engines might not meet CARB requirements in California and some other states. In Europe, EU Stage classifications apply. If the machine doesn't match your operating region, it's not a bargain at any price.
- Original market specification. A machine built for one region might have different lighting, wiring, or safety equipment. It can be re-certified, but that costs time and money.
If you're renting to national contractors who need certified fleets, document compliance before bidding.
Step 7: Work Backwards From Total Cost of Ownership
Here's the hard truth I learned after that first $180,000 mistake: a cheap auction price probably won't save you as much as you think.
Before you bid, build a spreadsheet with:
- Hammer price + buyer's premium + platform fees
- Freight and transport permits (LTM carriers are oversize; crawlers need lowboys—this is not cheap)
- Inspection, re-certification, and load testing
- Dealer commissioning and any software updates
- Parts and labor for known issues found in Step 3
- Insurance while it sits in storage (a cost people often forget)
Example from our own numbers: a machine that seemed 30% cheaper on the auction block ended up only 7% cheaper once everything was included. There are still good deals out there—you just need to know how to measure them. Everything I'd read about auctions said buyers save 30–40%. In practice, after premiums, re-certification, and freight, the savings can shrink to single digits fast.
The Mistakes I See Repeated
If you take nothing else, remember these:
- Don't trust the seller's "runs great" description. The LICCON event log is a better indicator than a clean exterior.
- Don't skip the dealer parts check. Availability is just as important as price.
- Don't bid on a configuration you don't fully understand. The "cheap" crane with the wrong jib or counterweight is no deal.
