- Our 'approved equivalent': $195 per set. Same SAE reference, but cast with 0.05-inch thread depth under spec. 'Within industry standard.'
The cost difference was $145 per set. On a $200,000 annual parts order, that's real money. But the cost of a field failure? Potentially $22,000 minimum. And that's just the direct cost.
I rejected the batch. Vendor wasn't happy. They redid it at their cost—around $4,000 in rework. But now every contract I write includes a clause: "All components must meet Liebherr published specifications for thread depth, hardness, and pressure rating. Tolerance must be within OEM spec, not 'industry standard.'"
What I Learned About Preventive Checks
Since implementing that rule, our first-pass acceptance rate for spare parts has gone from 78% to 96%. That 18% improvement didn't cost us money—it saved us time, stress, and potential rework.
