When Cheaper Isn't Better: My Liebherr 1750 Crane Parts Reality Check

The Two Options: A Straight-Up Comparison Framework

Let me lay out what I was comparing before I dive into the nitty-gritty. It wasn't just about price. I looked at four specific dimensions:

  • Upfront cost vs. true total cost
  • Availability and lead time
  • Quality and fit (the part that should be simple but often isn't)
  • Long-term support and documentation

Here's what I found. And fair warning: the conclusion surprised me.

Dimension 1: Upfront Cost – The Obvious Winner and the Hidden Loser

The third-party pump I was quoted was roughly $4,100. The OEM Liebherr part from the Liebherr parts catalog? $6,800. That's a $2,700 gap—a 40% difference. On paper, the third-party option looks like a no-brainer.

But here's the thing I've learned the hard way: that 40% savings disappears fast if the part doesn't fit perfectly, fails early, or requires custom modifications. One of our techs spent an extra 3 hours retrofitting a third-party hydraulic valve assembly last year. At shop rate, that's $300 in labor right there, not counting the crane's downtime. Suddenly, the discount narrows.

Dimension 2: Availability and Lead Time – The Surprise Twist

This is where things got interesting—and where my assumption was wrong.

I assumed OEM parts would always be faster. Liebherr has a global service network, right? Well, for this specific pump assembly for the 1750, the Liebherr lead time quoted in January 2024 was 6–8 weeks. The third-party vendor said 3–4 weeks.

I was surprised. Usually, the OEM has parts for their own machines, but the Liebherr 1750 is a massive, relatively rare crane. Not every part is stocked in a regional warehouse. For common items like filters or pins, I've seen OEM deliver in days. For a major hydraulic component? Slower than I expected.

The third-party vendor had it on the shelf because they specialize in remanufactured parts for large cranes. They had the stock. But I should note: we asked the OEM for expedited shipping, which would have shortened the timeline to 4 weeks—but added $800 in air freight. So the true 'fastest' option became a toss-up: $6,800 + $800 = $7,600 in 4 weeks vs. $4,100 in 3–4 weeks.

Dimension 3: Quality and Fit – Where I Almost Made a $2,000 Mistake

This is the dimension where the comparison got personal—and costly.

We went with the third-party pump. Ordered it. Arrived in 3 weeks as promised. But when the tech tried to install it, the mounting bracket didn't align with the existing bolt holes. It was off by about ⅛ of an inch.

I knew I should have asked for a detailed drawing or installation template before ordering, but I thought 'what are the odds the specs would be off?' Well, the odds caught up with me. We had to send it back for remachining—2 more weeks, plus $240 in labor for the removal and re-installation.

I still ordered the OEM part as a backup. We kept the remachined third-party pump on the shelf as a spare. (So glad I ordered the OEM part when I did—almost canceled it to save the cost.)

Dimension 4: Long-Term Support and Documentation – The Dealbreaker That Almost Wasn't

Here's a dimension most people don't think about until they're in trouble.

A year later, when the third-party pump started showing slight vibration—nothing catastrophic, but the operator noticed—I called the vendor for troubleshooting support. They had no technical documentation for the 1750. They couldn't tell me the acceptable pressure range or the expected lifecycle. They said 'send it back and we'll re-manufacture it.' That's fine for a spare, but not for a machine that's actively working.

The OEM's technical support, on the other hand, asked for the serial number of the pump and immediately sent me the pressure test procedure from the Liebherr service manual. They also had the replacement seals in stock. That kind of support is invisible on a quote sheet. It only matters when something goes wrong.

My Honest Recommendation: What to Choose and When

After this experience, I developed a simple rule of thumb for our Liebherr 1750 and other large crawlers:

  • For critical, hard-to-source, or expensive components (like the main hydraulic pump, swing drive, or superstructure engine parts): Go OEM. The documentation, support, and guaranteed fit are worth the premium. I learned this the hard way.
  • For consumables or easily replaceable items (filters, hoses, seals, wear pads): Third-party is fine, as long as you verify the specs and have a backup plan. We use third-party air filters with no issues. The cost savings here are real and safe.
  • For anything that affects safety or capacity (control systems, winch components, load safety devices): Always OEM. No question. The liability and operational risk are too high.

In hindsight, I should have ordered the OEM pump from the start, even at $6,800. The cost of the third-party option, plus the remachining, extra labor, and lost rental time, probably ended up being more than the OEM part would have cost outright. And I had to stock an extra spare anyway.

That said, the third-party pump is now our backup. It works—after modifications. For a less critical machine, it might have been acceptable. But for a flagship crane like the 1750, where reliability is everything, I'll eat the premium for OEM every time.
