The term covers everything from a 1.5-ton mini excavator that fits through a garden gate to Liebherr's R 9100 mining excavator, which weighs more than 500 tons. If you're trying to tell an excavator from a backhoe loader, the general rule is simple: an excavator digs toward itself, pulling the bucket inward with the dipper; a backhoe loader pushes the arm away from the machine and has a much lighter digging capability. What's the difference between a crawler crane and a mobile crane?
People use these two terms as if they're interchangeable. They're not. A crawler crane rides on tracks and uses its own weight plus counterweight for stability. A mobile crane rolls on tires and, in many configurations, needs outriggers to create a stable lifting platform.
Liebherr builds both. A mobile crane like the LTM 1500-8.1—also a 500-ton class machine—can travel between urban sites with less disassembly and fewer permits. A crawler crane like the LR 1500 needs transport trailers and a day of setup, but it can walk with a load and work on softer ground where tires would sink.
Which one is better? Depends entirely on your operation. If you're serving a wind farm or a mine where the lifting points move as the job progresses, a crawler keeps up with the work. If you're a rental contractor moving between city blocks, the mobile crane gives you way more uptime per week and way less permit paperwork. I'm not going to pick one for you. I'll just say the machine that matches your job site's rhythm is the better tool, regardless of the tonnage on the side.
What should I ask before renting a Liebherr crane or excavator?
Here is what a quality inspector asks before approving a rental or lease:
- What does the load chart for this exact serial number say? Ask for a copy, not a summary.
- When was the hydraulic fluid sampled? Ask for the ISO 4406 particle count from the last 90 days.

The last item is where I've seen budgets blow up. A rate sheet that looks low on paper can expand by 30% once you add adapters, travel time, and site preparation. A higher daily rate that bundles everything together often lands at a lower total cost. I would rather pay more per day and know the line items than get a cheap quote and a monthly supplemental invoice full of surprises.
