Every equipment request eventually crosses my desk. I handle purchasing for a company of about 400 people across three locations — and that means fielding requests that range from a $100 impact drill to a four-figure crane rental. Roughly 60 to 80 orders a year, with a solid chunk of that being material handling and access equipment.
The most common mix-ups? Forklifts, scissor lifts, and crane trucks. When Does a Liebherr Crane Truck Become the Right Answer?
A Liebherr crane truck is a different category entirely. The LTM series — the models that show up in most fleet rental inventories — offers lifting capacities from about 40 metric tons up into the 200-plus-ton range. The one we came close to renting in 2024 was an LTM 1060-3.1: 60 tons of capacity, a telescopic boom that reaches roughly 140 feet, all mounted on a roadable truck chassis. The machine itself is impressive — the load charts, the control precision, the engineering. That part was never in doubt.
Nobody should rent one just because it's impressive. You rent a crane truck when the load has to be lifted up, over, and across — over a roof parapet, past an excavation, above a building line. That is the job a forklift physically cannot do.
In one comparison we ran, a facility manager needed a heat exchanger moved from ground level to a second-floor mezzanine. A forklift could bring it to the building edge. That was it. When I get a request that says “we need something to get up to the ceiling,” the first suggestion from the requester is often a crane. Sometimes someone has seen a crane truck with a man basket and thinks that solves it. It can — for a specific short job with the right conditions. But renting a 60-ton crane truck to change a 20-foot light fixture is like buying a drill rig to hang a picture. A scissor lift does the job at a fraction of the cost, with much easier logistics.
Simple rule: if the load is two people and a toolbox, it's a scissor lift. If the load is a pallet of material that needs to go 40 feet into the air, it's not.
Cost Comparison: Day Rates Tell an Honest but Incomplete Story

Because day rate is not total cost. If a crane truck completes a critical lift in one day — a lift that would otherwise take a crew three days with forklifts, chain hoists, and temporary rigging — then the higher rate is the cheaper overall project. We've seen that math hold up more than once.
I should add the reverse warning: this logic gets abused. A colleague once pushed for a crane rental to replace two ceiling fixtures. The crane was genuinely available and the quote looked clean. A standard forklift needs a flat, hard floor and enough aisle width. A scissor lift needs hard, level ground — or a rough-terrain variant plus a ground assessment. A crane truck needs a stable surface for outriggers, room to swing, and overhead clearance for the boom. If the soil under the outriggers is saturated, or the roof slab can't support the crane's loads at the required radius, the crane truck simply isn't an option.
I came within days of signing a crane rental for a rooftop HVAC replacement before a site supervisor sent me the structural load report. The roof slab's live-load capacity wouldn't support the sustained outrigger loads at the reach we needed. We dodged an expensive and unsafe mistake — the crane would have shown up, fully billed, and been unusable. So glad we caught it in time.
Capabilities tell you what's possible. Site constraints tell you what's practical. Collect the site data before you commit to a rental, not after.
And the Impact-Drill-Sized Request

Which One Should You Actually Rent or Buy?
Here's how the decision breaks down when it reaches my desk:
Forklift. If your business moves palletized material daily across a hard, flat surface, buy or lease one. It's a production tool, not a one-off rental. Size it to your heaviest regular load and budget for operator training.
Scissor lift. If your teams regularly work at heights of 20 to 40 feet — ceiling work, wiring, ducting, exterior maintenance — rent one for occasional use, or consider buying used if you've verified storage space and access routes.
Liebherr crane truck. If you have a genuine heavy lift — a rooftop unit, a steel beam, a transformer — rent one for those specific days. It's the least likely of the three to justify an outright purchase for a general-purpose company.
Impact drill. If you're making holes and driving fasteners, that's a small-tool purchase. Give it a P.O. and move on. It doesn't belong in the equipment decision process.
And if you're genuinely unsure, ask the questions I ask myself on every equipment request: What's the load? How high does it need to go? What's the site surface? Is there overhead clearance? Answer those four honestly and the category tends to pick itself.
A Rookie Mistake That Changed My Process
In my first year in this role, I made the classic trust-the-request error. An internal client asked for a scissor lift for an outdoor electrical job.
