There Is No Universal Rental Answer
Look, I get the question. Someone sends a spec sheet for a Liebherr 946 excavator, then a sales rep asks about a Liebherr 800 ton crane, and suddenly everyone wants to know which one is better. The honest answer is not “the bigger one.” The honest answer is: it depends on what your job actually needs.
I say that from experience. In my first serious equipment role (2017), I approved a big crane rental for a job that was really an excavation problem. The load chart said the crane would handle every lift. It would have—if lifting had been the bottleneck. It wasn’t. The bottleneck was digging, moving spoil, and keeping the foundation crew fed. The crane sat idle for two days, and I still kick myself for not asking the obvious question first: what is the machine doing for most of the shift?
That mistake cost roughly $14,000 in idle time and mobilization. I documented it, then built a checklist so I don’t repeat it. This article is that checklist in article form.
Start With the Bottleneck, Not the Brochure
Here’s the thing: a 50-tonne-class excavator and an 800-tonne crane are both heavy equipment, but they solve different problems. If you compare them by weight class, you’re comparing the wrong numbers. Use three questions:
- What is the limiting operation? Digging, lifting, grade control, or concrete placement?
- How many hours per day will the machine run in that operation?
- What happens if that operation is slow?
If the answer to the third question is “the whole site stops,” that operation decides which machine you need. Not the heaviest piece on the drawing.
Scenario A: Digging, Loading, and Breaking Rock
If your bottleneck is excavation, the Liebherr 946 excavator belongs in the conversation. According to Liebherr’s published model information (liebherr.com, accessed February 2025), the R 946 Litronic is a crawler excavator in the 50-tonne class. I’m careful with the word “class” because the actual operating weight, bucket capacity, and reach depend on the configuration. That’s not a weasel word; it’s a warning. I once ordered a 946—or rather, I approved a 946 rental without checking the reach specification. We got a machine with the right engine and the wrong arm length for the excavation depth. The rental rate didn’t change. The productivity did.
Another phrase that shows up on site is “skull crusher.” It’s not a Liebherr model. In my experience, it’s a nickname for a hydraulic breaker attachment on an excavator. A 946 carrying a breaker can handle rock-breaking work, but you need the carrier weight, hydraulic flow, and bracket spec to match the breaker. If someone says “we need a skull crusher,” ask for the hammer model and carrier weight before you quote. Treating it as a generic excavator attachment is how you end up with a breaker that bounces instead of breaks.
One more thing: the 946 is a digging and loading tool. It can lift pipes and culverts, but that’s not its main job. If your day consists of moving 2,000 tonnes of material, that’s the excavator scenario.
Scenario B: Lifting, Positioning, and Heavy Assembly
If your bottleneck is lifting, the Liebherr 800 ton crane range is a different decision. The LTM 1800-8.1, for example, is an 800-tonne-class mobile crane in Liebherr’s telescopic range (liebherr.com, accessed February 2025). An 800-tonne crane is for heavy assemblies: big process skids, bridge segments, wind components, pre-cast elements. It’s not a shortcut around excavation.

The cost is not just the crane itself. It’s the counterweight trucks, the matting, the site access, the crane setup crew, and the idle time while the real bottleneck waits.

That’s the scenario branch: if lifting is occasional and excavation is continuous, a 946 with the right attachment is often the better answer. If every day is about placing heavy items at awkward radii, an 800-ton crane is the right category.
Scenario C: Site Prep, Grading, and Short-Distance Material Movement
Then there are the jobs that are not really digging or lifting. They’re pushing. That’s the “crewe tractor” situation. I’ve seen “crewe tractor” written in handover notes and quote requests. I once ignored it as a typo. The site manager meant a crawler tractor—a tracked dozer used for clearing, pushing fill, and final grade work. Not ideal spelling, but a legitimate machine category.
If the bottleneck is grading a large area or moving material a short distance on soft ground, a crawler tractor can outperform both the 946 and an 800-ton crane. It’s the machine that spreads the material the excavator loads. I learned that lesson in September 2022, when I quoted an excavator for a job that really needed a dozer. The excavator loaded trucks all day. The trucks waited. A crawler tractor pushing material across a pad would have kept everyone busy.
If someone types “crewe tractor,” don’t laugh. Ask whether they mean a crawler tractor, then check the blade width and operating weight. This is exactly the kind of term that makes procurement people nervous, but it’s simpler than it looks.
Scenario D: Concrete Supply and Placement
Now, the phrase “what is a mixer” sounds basic. But I’ve seen it cause a real mix-up. In construction, a mixer usually means a concrete mixer—either a truck mixer, a stationary mixer, or a mixing plant. It keeps cement, aggregate, water, and admixtures mixed until placement. If your bottleneck is concrete placement, you don’t choose a 946 or an 800-ton crane first. You choose a delivery and mixing system that can keep the pour continuous.
I still remember a project where the concrete supplier asked for the mixer specification, and I almost answered with the excavator bucket size. The two pieces of equipment are not interchangeable. A mixer is not an attachment. It’s a complete batching problem, and mixing quality affects the client’s perception of the finished structure. That’s not something you can fix with a bigger crane.
How to Tell Which Scenario You’re In
By now you’re probably thinking: “Great, but which one do I need?” Here’s the practical test:
- If the site will be delayed when digging or loading stops, start with the Liebherr 946 excavator and its attachments.
- If the site will be delayed when lifting stops, start with the Liebherr 800 ton crane range and its load charts.
- If the site will be delayed when material is not spread or graded, start with a crawler tractor (sometimes typed “crewe tractor”).
- If the site will be delayed when concrete cannot be delivered and placed, start with a mixer and mixing system specification.
That last point ties to something I’ve come to believe: the machine is the brand signal. In a visible job, the first piece of equipment on site tells the client what kind of contractor you are. I’m not saying you should rent the most expensive machine for show. I am saying that when the equipment is right for the operation, the site runs smoother, the crew looks professional, and the client remembers that. A contractor who shows up with a clean 946 and a matched hydraulic breaker makes a different impression than one who shows up with an oversized crane and no plan.
Final Pre-Check Before You Sign
Before you approve any rental or purchase, write one sentence that describes the limiting operation. If you can’t, you’re not ready to choose the machine.
My pre-check list looks like this:
- What is the bottleneck: digging, lifting, grading, or concrete?
- How many hours per day is the machine actually working?
- What is the site access, ground bearing pressure, and working radius?
- Do the attachments match the carrier weight and hydraulic flow?
- What does the client see when the machine starts working?
The last question is not soft. It’s a quality perception issue. When I switched from a mismatched rental setup to a properly matched Liebherr setup on a high-visibility job, the site manager noticed the difference in cycle times. The client noticed the organized crew. The machine was not priced like an accessory. It was the brand.
