Largest Liebherr Crawler Crane, Where They're Made, and Other Spec Questions

I review roughly 200 equipment specifications a year. In Q1 2024, I rejected 4% of first deliveries. Not because the machines were broken. Because the requirements were incomplete. This FAQ covers the questions I keep seeing in tenders, parts requests, and service reports.

What is the largest Liebherr crawler crane?

The largest Liebherr crawler crane in production is the LR 13000. According to Liebherr's published specifications (liebherr.com), it has a maximum lifting capacity of 3,000 tonnes. That's enough to lift 100 concrete trucks if the ground can support it. That last part matters more than most people think.

I tell every project engineer the same thing: a capacity number is not a safe working load for every job. The LR 13000 is a modular heavy-lift crane. Its actual load chart depends on radius, ground bearing pressure, wind, and configuration. The 3,000-tonne rating is not a 'this always works' rating. Some buyers compare maximum capacities and assume the bigger number wins. Simple. It doesn't. Radius changes everything.

The LR 13000 can also be configured with different boom lengths and ballast arrangements. I've seen load charts that look similar on paper until you compare the radius at 30 metres. That's where the practical lifting limit shows up. If someone quotes you a 3,000-tonne crane, always ask: at what radius, with what ballast, on what ground.

Where are Liebherr cranes made?

The short answer: the main assembly plant for Liebherr mobile and crawler cranes is in Ehingen, Germany. The Liebherr-Werk Ehingen factory handles many LTM mobile cranes and LR crawler cranes. That's the plant people usually mean when they talk about Made in Germany.

But component sourcing is broader. Booms, winches, and hydraulic systems can come from other Liebherr plants in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, or elsewhere. For some regional markets, final assembly may happen closer to the delivery site. So where are Liebherr cranes made doesn't have a single answer unless you specify the model and delivery location.

This matters for parts and warranty. A crane assembled from approved components at a regional facility can have a different part-number set than one fully built in Ehingen. In 2023, one buyer assumed 'European-built' meant one factory. His service manual had a different parts catalog than the one he ordered. That cost two weeks before the first lift.

If you're buying a used Liebherr crane, the serial plate is the first thing I check. The country of final assembly dictates which spare-parts catalogue applies. Some components are interchangeable, some are not. Where are Liebherr cranes made is not a marketing question. It's a logistics question.

How does a water pump work?

At the simplest level, a water pump moves water by creating a pressure difference. It takes water in at a lower pressure and discharges it at a higher pressure. Most water pumps on construction equipment are centrifugal pumps. An impeller spins inside a casing, flings water outward, and the housing converts that velocity into pressure.

In a diesel engine, the water pump is not optional. It circulates coolant through the block, radiator, and heater core. If the seal fails, coolant drips out. If the impeller corrodes, the engine overheats even when the coolant level looks fine.

A worn impeller reduces flow before it reduces pressure. That's why checking coolant temperature isn't enough. There are also diaphragm and gear pumps, but the centrifugal design dominates engine cooling because it can move high volume at moderate pressure.

I once rejected a replacement water pump because the impeller material did not match the coolant spec. The outside looked perfect. The box looked original. The casting was wrong. That's why 'does it fit?' is the wrong question. 'Does it match the spec?' is the right one.

What plate compactor specs actually matter?

Liebherr doesn't build plate compactors as a core product line, but you will still see them on a Liebherr jobsite. I've inspected plenty. The spec a lot of buyers check first is engine power. The spec I check first is centrifugal force.

A plate compactor densifies soil, asphalt, or gravel by impact energy per plate area, not just engine horsepower. Two compactors can have the same engine and very different compaction depth because one has a heavier, better-designed base plate.

Things I verify before buying or renting:

  • Centrifugal force in kN, published at a defined frequency.
  • Base plate dimensions and force per square meter.
  • Operating weight vs. transport weight. They are not the same.
  • Hand-arm vibration isolation. That's a health issue, not a comfort item.

Also, if you see a compacting tool specified only as a '5-ton plate compactor', stop. Is that the weight of the machine or the centrifugal force? They are different. I've had to send back an order because the buyer confused the two. It took me four years of inspecting vibrating plates to understand that engine power was the least interesting number. The conventional wisdom says more horsepower means more work. In practice, force per plate area and compaction depth tell the real story.

Can you order a bidet attachment from Liebherr?

No. A bidet attachment is not in Liebherr's construction equipment accessory catalog. I'll say that plainly because I once saw a purchase request for one. It wasn't a joke. Someone typed 'bidet attachment' when the actual line item was 'bracket attachment' for a crawler crane. The typo survived two approvals until I flagged it. That's the kind of thing that makes me check every line of a parts list.

Attachments are a bigger quality issue than most people expect. I've learned never to assume same specifications from a third-party attachment. Same can mean the mounting pattern is identical, but the hydraulic flow requirements are not. If you're ordering a hydraulic attachment, verify the certified flow, pressure, and control method against the carrier's hydraulic system guide. If the vendor can't show that data, it's not a spec. It's a guess.

Even genuine Liebherr attachments should be verified against the model number. The same quick coupler on a 100-tonne crane and a 250-tonne crane is not automatically the same coupler. I'm not saying third-party is always bad. I'm saying same is not a spec.

What should you ask about a Liebherr service quote before paying?

I've learned to ask what's NOT included before I ask what's included. A quote might say 'travel and per diem not included.' That's transparent. The problem is when a quote says Liebherr service and excludes commissioning, software setup, or operator familiarization.

A transparent vendor lists all fees upfront, even if the total looks higher. The less transparent vendor waits until invoice time. The first one is almost always cheaper in the end.

Here's the checklist I use for every service quote:

  • Does the price include parts, or only labor?
  • Is travel billed at actual cost or a flat rate?
  • Are crane configuration, setup, and load testing included?
  • What happens if the response time in the warranty clause isn't met?

We didn't have a formal approval chain for service quotes in 2021. That's when a $22,000 invoice showed up with a line item nobody had approved. Since then, every quote goes through the same checklist. The third time I needed it, I finally built the process. Should have been the first.
